What is Laser Hair Removal?
Medical lasers target the pigment in the hair follicle. The laser's energy is absorbed by the hair and converted to heat, which damages the follicle and reduces its ability to grow new hair. Common treatment areas include the upper lip, chin, underarms, arms, legs, back and bikini area.
Hair grows in cycles and only actively growing hairs respond to treatment, which is why a series of sessions is needed.
When to see a physician
- You're tired of frequent shaving, waxing or threading
- You get razor bumps or ingrown hairs
- You have unwanted facial or body hair
- Hair growth has changed suddenly — this may need a medical evaluation first
How we evaluate
At your consultation we review your skin type, hair color and thickness, medications and sun exposure, and check the treatment area. Laser settings are chosen to match your skin and hair. If unwanted hair growth appears hormonal, we may recommend a medical evaluation as well.
Treatment options at DR WW Dermatology
- Face. Upper lip, chin, jawline and neck.
- Body. Underarms, arms, legs, back, chest and abdomen.
- Bikini area. Bikini line and extended bikini treatments.
- Ingrown hair relief. Treatment that can reduce razor bumps and ingrown hairs over time.
Not every option suits every patient, and availability of specific devices varies by office. Your physician will recommend a plan after an in-person evaluation.
What to expect: treatment, recovery and aftercare
Most patients need about six to eight sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart, depending on the area. Sessions feel like a quick snap against the skin and last from a few minutes to under an hour. Mild redness and swelling usually fade within hours. Avoid tanning and waxing before treatment, shave the area the day before, and use sunscreen afterward.
Frequently asked questions
Is laser hair removal permanent?
It provides long-term hair reduction. Most patients see a significant decrease in hair, and some may need occasional maintenance sessions.
Does laser hair removal work on all skin types?
Many skin types can be treated safely with the appropriate laser and settings. Very light, gray or red hair responds poorly because it lacks pigment.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes. Shaving is fine, but avoid waxing, plucking or threading, which remove the hair the laser needs to target.
