Laser Tattoo Removal

Whether you want a tattoo gone or lightened for a cover-up, laser treatment breaks up tattoo ink so your body can gradually clear it.

What is Tattoo Removal?

Tattoo lasers deliver extremely short pulses of energy that shatter ink particles into fragments small enough for the body's immune system to carry away. Over a series of sessions, the tattoo fades.

Results depend on the ink colors, how deep and dense the ink is, the tattoo's age and location, and your skin type. Black and dark blue usually respond best; some colors are more resistant.

When to see a physician

  • You'd like to remove a tattoo completely
  • You want to lighten a tattoo before a cover-up
  • You have cosmetic tattooing, such as eyebrows, you'd like to fade (evaluated case by case)

How we evaluate

Your physician examines the tattoo's colors, size and location and reviews your skin type and health history. We'll give you an honest estimate of how much fading is realistic and roughly how many sessions it may take.

Treatment options at DR WW Dermatology

  • Full removal. A series of treatments aimed at clearing the tattoo as much as possible.
  • Fading for cover-up. Fewer sessions to lighten a design so a new tattoo can cover it.
  • Small and fine-line tattoos. Names, dates and small designs often need fewer sessions.

Not every option suits every patient, and availability of specific devices varies by office. Your physician will recommend a plan after an in-person evaluation.

What to expect: treatment, recovery and aftercare

Most tattoos need multiple sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart to let the body clear the ink. Treatment feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin; numbing and cooling help with comfort. Afterward, the area may be red, swollen, or form a frosted white appearance and sometimes blisters. Keep it clean, follow the aftercare instructions and protect it from the sun.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions does tattoo removal take?

Many tattoos need six or more sessions, but the number varies with ink colors, depth, age and location.

Will my tattoo be completely gone?

Many tattoos can be removed or faded substantially. Some inks are more resistant, and your physician will give you a realistic expectation.

Does tattoo removal leave a scar?

The risk of scarring is low when aftercare instructions are followed, but temporary lightening or darkening of the skin can occur.
