What is nail fungus?
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail. Affected nails may become thick, yellow, white or brown, brittle or crumbly, and may lift away from the nail bed. Toenails are affected far more often than fingernails, and infection often begins with athlete's foot.
Psoriasis, injury and other conditions can make nails look very similar, which is why a dermatologist's evaluation matters before starting a long course of treatment.
When to see a dermatologist
- A nail is thickened, discolored or crumbling
- Store-bought treatments haven't helped
- Nails are painful or making shoes uncomfortable
- You have diabetes or circulation problems
- Several nails are involved, or the infection keeps returning
How we evaluate
Your dermatologist examines the nails and surrounding skin and may take a small nail clipping for laboratory testing to confirm a fungal infection. We also review your health history and medications, which affect which treatments are safe for you.
Treatment options at DR WW Dermatology
- Topical antifungals. Prescription nail solutions for mild infections or as part of a combination plan.
- Oral antifungals. Prescription medication for moderate to severe infection, with any recommended monitoring.
- Laser nail treatment. Laser energy directed at the infected nail as an option for patients who prefer to avoid or cannot take oral medication. Availability varies by office.
- Prevention. Footwear, hygiene and athlete's foot care to lower the chance of reinfection.
Not every option suits every patient, and availability of specific devices varies by office. Your dermatologist will recommend a plan after an in-person evaluation.
What to expect: treatment, recovery and aftercare
Nails grow slowly, so even successful treatment takes time to show: fingernails can take about six months to grow out clear, and toenails twelve to eighteen months. Laser treatment usually involves several sessions. We schedule follow-ups to track progress as the healthy nail grows in.
Frequently asked questions
Does laser treatment for nail fungus hurt?
Most patients describe a feeling of warmth during treatment. No numbing is usually needed and you can walk normally afterward.
How long does it take to clear nail fungus?
Because nails grow slowly, it can take six months for fingernails and twelve to eighteen months for toenails to look clear.
Can nail fungus come back?
Yes, reinfection is common. Treating athlete's foot, keeping feet dry and disinfecting shoes help reduce the risk.
