Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect Before, During and After

How to prepare, how sessions feel, how many you'll need and how to care for your skin afterward.

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in dermatology. Knowing what to expect helps you prepare well and get the most out of each session.

Before your first session

  • Book a consultation. Your skin type, hair color and medications determine which laser settings are safe and effective.
  • Avoid sun and self-tanner on the area for at least two weeks. Tanned skin raises the risk of burns and pigment changes.
  • Stop waxing, plucking and threading for several weeks. The laser needs the hair root in place to work.
  • Shave the area the day before your appointment, unless you are told otherwise.
  • Tell your provider about new medications, recent sun exposure or a history of cold sores if the face is being treated.

During the treatment

You'll wear protective eyewear. The laser is passed over the skin in pulses, often with built-in cooling. Most people describe the sensation as a quick snap, like a rubber band. Small areas such as the upper lip take just minutes; larger areas such as the legs or back take longer.

After the treatment

  • Redness and small bumps around follicles are common and usually settle within hours to a day.
  • Treated hairs may appear to keep “growing” for a week or two as they shed — this is normal.
  • Use sunscreen and avoid tanning between sessions.
  • Skip hot tubs, saunas and intense workouts for a day if your skin feels warm or irritated.

How many sessions will I need?

Hair grows in cycles, and lasers work only on hairs in the active growth phase. That's why most people need about six to eight sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the body area. Some people benefit from occasional maintenance treatments afterward.

Who is a good candidate?

Laser hair removal works best on hair that has pigment. Very light blonde, gray, white and red hairs respond poorly. With appropriate technology and settings, many skin tones can be treated safely — that's an important reason to have treatment performed under physician supervision.

If unwanted hair has appeared suddenly or is growing in a male pattern, mention it at your visit. It can occasionally signal a hormonal condition worth evaluating.
